Tips for using Brain Based Strategies

-It is fine to tell your students that you understand these activities might be silly or uncomfortable, but be sure to also tell them that they are going to help them and that you believe in them.

-While some of these activities pretty easily lend themselves to be competitions, avoid allowing them to become competitions in class. Turning them into races or competitions can actually have an adverse effect on your students’ brains.

-Try these out before doing them with your class, not only will you be more comfortable leading them, but you may even have some personal testimony to their effectiveness.

- You know your students, only choose brain breaks that you can see working with your students in your class. If you think a specific one won’t work, don’t feel like you need to try it.

-Do not punish students for not participating. Even if you are the only one in the room performing the brain break, the students are still watching and learning a great strategy for self-regulation that they may attempt sometime.

-Many of these activities work best when done for 2-5 minutes, start with doing them for just 1-2 minutes to get your students used to them.
